Schwartz's - Montreal's Finest Smoked Meat (Montreal, QC)

Schwartz's

Schwartz's

I know a lot of people rave about Langer's in Los Angeles and Katz's deli in New York City, but today, I'll bring another challenger to the ring: Schwartz's of Montreal.

Schwartz's

Line Outside Schwartz's

Look at that line! On this particular Saturday afternoon, we nearly waited a hour to get into Schwartz's. Once I was in, I was ready to eat!

Schwartz's

Can of Cherry Soda

I was told this is what most Montreal citizens order with their smoked meat, a can of cherry soda. Thus, I decided to go with what locals drink. It's cherry soda, tasty, but you get the picture, it's just soda.

Schwartz's

Side of Fries (2.50 CAD) and Cole Slaw (1.95 CAD)

Neither were memorable, thus, I'd just pass on the fries and slaw and order an extra smoked meat sandwich!

Varies Shots of the Smoked Meat Sandwich (5.50 CAD)

A picture is a worth a thousand words, right? What about four pictures? For something under US$5, you get an amazing amount of smoked meat, with a healthy helping of mustard between two half slices of bread. Simply amazing! I know Katz's pastrami was fantastic, but this smoked meat in my opinion is better. Yes, it's different meat, a totally different thing all together, but hey, I just prefer this one more! Heck, the only regret I had that day we not ordering a 2nd sandwich, especially with the wait we had to endure. Thankfully, there would be a return visit! (future post)

Dining Room at Schwartz's

The atmosphere at Schwartz's was truly no frills: Just simple and delicious. The locals and tourists both flock towards this establishment since its opening way back in 1928. Something has to be right about this place!

Personally, I've yet to try Langer's, but I enjoyed Katz's quite a bit on my recent trip to NYC. However, it's Schwartz's smoked meat that has won over my heart! I know many may disagree, many may argue the Katz's pastrami cannot be beat, but take a visit to Montreal and let me know what you think of the smoked meat. In my opinion, a fantastic deal, and a fantastic sandwich!

Does anyone want to order some smoked meat with me? Yes they do deliver, and no, I'm not joking!

Final Rating 9 out of 10

Your smoked meat sandwich pics are foodporntastic! Not really helping with my diet mode this morning. Let's do Langer's soon - "cheat day!!" LOL

I haven't been to Langer's either -- sounds like we need to have a D2 road trip!

Though I'm hoping that sammy doesn't involve quiite as much meat. What is that... 4 inches??

Ack. What is it with these LA food bloggers who haven't been to Langer's? It should be some sort of a crime. I'm not talking capital, but at least a misdemeanor.

Anyway, great report. Schwartz's is definitely the third point of the great pastrami triangle which includes Katz's and Langer's.

Hey, my wife and I are UC Davis Grads too! We haven't been to katz Deli yet, but it looks fun!

If you come to NY again and liked the El Diabo at 11 Madison, try the drinks at Back 40--they're awesome!

The only thing I hate in this entire world is yellow mustard. I'll just eat the middle. Wait till we do a Italian beef crawl in Chi-town!

Remil: Let's hope we don't have TOO many "cheat days!" But I'm down to try Langer's!

Diana: Let's go! But ya, it was a lot of meat, esp for the price.

sku: Haha, I never craved it so I never thought about going. It also closes early, I think. Definitely it's on my list to try soon.

For some reason I loved the smoked meat more than pastrami.

Aron: First of all. Aggie Pride! :)

I'll definitely need to add Back 40 to the list, esp I see that it has some damn good late night eats!

Cathy: I loved Schwartz's! Ya, it looks like a lot of us haven't tried Langer's. Let's make it happen!

Bonni: I'm not too crazy about yellow mustard either, but I usually just deal with it and eat it. I can't wait for the Italian Beef crawl!

Anna: You're on the Langer's crew. We must go before you leave!

Ooh, I love me some pastrami. Well, if I'm ever in Montreal...

Also, I'd like to add myself to the list of those who have never been to Langer's (with the exception of takeout of 3 items when I'm sick).

Damn I was just in Montreal last year and I didn't try this place. I do stand by Katz I am fortunate to have a buddy overnight me some pastrami when I have some cravings. I really been meaning to try langers I have heard great things ironic that it's 20 minutes away from me and I have yet to try it.

I definitely recommend that you try Langer's sooner rather than later. I think it might give this place a run for its money. Well actually on that note, I think Schwartz's looks excellent for the price.

Misty: I think you've since been to Langer's, but I still need to go!

North: If you go, let me know what you think. Just expect a nice wait though, but it's well worth it in the end. Order more than I did, I regretted not ordering more that day, though I did go back for a to-go order the following night.

Matt: Langer's is definitely on the must-try list!

Thirsty Pig: You bet, I want some now too!

I been to both Langer's and Katz's. Personally, I think Katz's pastrami is amazing (melt-in-your-mouth, I'm-in-heaven kind of amazing) while Langer's is good but nowhere as good as Katz's.

Another place worth trying is Johnnie's Pastrami in Culver City.

J: Katz's is quite good and I've been told it's better than Langer's. I'd love to eat at Katz's again, but not at 9am for breakfast like what I did.....

Thanks for the rec with Johnnie's!
